Quilts have been on my mind a lot lately. I am constantly calling my sister (my sewing partner in crime) during the day with excited exclamations about a quilt I just saw on flickr or read about in blogland. It is the number one item on my 2008 sewing resolution list afterall. It was about time I dived into this new to me sewing territory.
Hence, work on my Amy Butler Brick Path Quilt started this week. I think this will be a good getting-my-feet-wet-in-quilting project. I quickly learned what I hope is the hardest part of quilting: cutting accurately! I've never liked the cutting part of any project. If anyone has any tips on how to quickly yet accurately cut two hundred 4 1/2" by 7" rectangles, please share.
I am now taking bets on how long it will take me to complete this quilt. Seriously, I really would like to take bets. Maybe it will make me move a little faster on this. I might even send the person with the winning bet a prize! To help you guesstimate a little better, here's some info: I started this on Tuesday night and haven't touched it since. So far I've cut out 36 of the necessary 198 "bricks". I have all of the supplies I need for this quilt including the batting, backing, and machine quilting thread. I plan to work on this a lot until I get it done, BUT, I do have craft ADD and can't promise that I won't start another project before this one is done. "Finished" is defined as sewn, quilted, and washed. So go on, make a bet! (Pretty please!)
P.S. Don't worry, I won't be offended if you say twelve months or even five years so please don't be discouraged to make a guess.
it looks nice
ReplyDeleteare you using a rotary cutter, ruler and mat for the cutting? these make it go really fast and accurate (I always hate that part too)once you get it cut out that top should go together really fast, especially if you are chain-piecing. good luck!
ReplyDeleteHi Kate, thanks for commenting. I am indeed using those tools. Maybe I just need to get into the rhythm of it. :)
ReplyDeleteI just learned about a quilting shop in my area that has a cutting machine. I've never actually seen it, but apparently it's a die cutter you use at the store and pay by the hour. Could be worth checking out!
ReplyDeleteOh I love that quilt... I'm going to guess that you'll be done the first week of June.
ReplyDeleteI have always wanted to learn how to quilt but I am completely daunted by all that cutting. The quilt looks pretty big, I think you'll finish by the end of summer, maybe end of August?
ReplyDeletelove the fabric you picked! i am loving urple with red lately.
ReplyDeleteMy guess is eight months. can't wait to see it!
I am planning my first quilt too! Cutting is the worst part of any project for me, maybe because I am left-handed.
ReplyDeleteAre you using all fabrics from the lotus line, or are you mixing all your favorites?
I think once you cut out all your bricks you'll be super fast. I'll bet you finish by the 4th of July!
Good Luck
18 days from today. once you start sewing...you'll be addicted! -kb
ReplyDeleteI hope you do finish it as it would be great to see the result. I'm going to guesstimate 5 months, with distractions that life provides. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say two and a half months (using the scientific method of estimating how long it would take me to do it and dividing that number by 50...).
ReplyDeleteI think the cutting could take some time (2 weeks), but that once you start sewing you will become addicted to watching the quilt grow...so I think you'll have it done in 1 month and 19 days....x
ReplyDeleteHmmm, I won't place a bet as it's been nearly two years since I started my first quilt and it's not done yet. In fact, it's been ready to quilt since last July. I'm just too scared/lazy/flighty to do it.
ReplyDeleteI really like the fabric you have chosen, its really vibrant. I am thinking of starting a quilt, it just seems so scary and big! I think you will have it done in two and a half months.
ReplyDeleteLove this quilt, and am planning on making a crib-sized version for a friend's baby in a month or two!
ReplyDeleteI think you'll be done on May 26th after a final Memorial Day push!
As for cutting, go find a piece of quilting template plastic at your local fabric store. Buy the heaviest kind they have (usually 2 bucks or so for one piece) and cut out one "brick" from it. Then use that instead of a ruler with your rotary cutter. Triple, quadruple or quintuple the layers of fabric and cut five at a time!
I'll bet July 3rd.
ReplyDeletegood luck!
7 months ! Finished in November !
ReplyDeleteHmm...I'll guess that you'll have the top all pieced together by Friday week...but then, are you on-a-mission machine quilting or enjoying-the-moment hand quilting? I will watch with interest. My first quilt is on my to-do list for next year, when I anticipate a little more time...but I have to start with a double bed size, as my Mum has already made quilts for all my children, as well as a few picnic throws.
