Fall Swap Sent

Have I gushed enough about the book, Stitch and Bitch Crochet: The Happy Hooker? No? Well, let me gush some more then. I participated in Chara's Fall Swap. When I think of Fall, I think of sweaters and scarves and beautiful leaf colors. So for this swap, I made my partner, Joy, a one skein scarf (the third one I've made in as many months), and a crocheted flower pin in Fall colors using patterns from the book. I also included some caramel apple cider candles (yummm), a fall stamp, some stickers and ribbon. I hope Joy likes the package.

One skein scarves

Lately all I've been wanting to do is crochet. I'm sure it's the changing seasons.

Because I've been too lazy to learn to knit

I decided to expand my crochet skills beyond the granny square. I was doing one of my favorite activities the other evening, browsing through the craft books at the bookstore, and picked up this book. Wow! It is filled with some really cute and cool patterns.


I'll be browsing the yarn section instead of the fabric section at the craft store this weekend. Really, who am I kidding? I'm sure I'll come away with more yarn and fabric.

"Don't tease, aim to please"

So the bottom of my beercap read last night. I thought it a fitting title for this post, since I haven't been teasing you over the past week with WIP pictures of my latest project. As much as I love sewing, sometimes I just want to have a project that I can work on while sitting in front of the tv. Thus, last week I picked up a crochet hook and some yarn and just did whatever my hands told me. Since I only know how to do a chain stitch and a granny square, it's not surprising that they started making more granny squares. I already have a granny square bag, so I wasn't sure where the project was going. Luckily, as soon as I finished the first square, an image popped into my mind. Thus, the granny square clutch was born.


I wanted to make it sturdy in my hand, so I sandwiched Timetex in between the inner and outer lining of the bag. So there are actually four layers to this bag: the outer crochet layer, brown lining to hide the timetex, timetex, and then a peek-a-boo polka dot inner lining. To keep my goods in the bag, I used a zipper closure. Check my flickr page for more detailed pictures.


I finished the bag in perfect time for Sew Mama Sew bag month. While I did use crochet in this project, there was still plenty of sewing.

Granny Bag

Ta-da! It's finished - finito - complete - you get the idea. I lined it with brown cotton fabric (recycled from Ikea curtains) and added brown and white polka dotted pockets and a magnetic snap. I love this bag so much just for the outside layer but that polka dot does add an extra cute punch. I wanted to show you the inside, but I forgot to take pictures during this shoot and I'm afraid if I wait for another good opportunity to take a picture then you would be waiting a while for this post.


The bag is inspired by this bag from Anthropologie. I brought the bag with me to Easter brunch where I could show it off to my Mom and thank her again for teaching me how to crochet a granny square. She was really impressed with it. My middle sister, not so much. I like to think that this is because we have different tastes and that is ok by me. To each her own.

Odds and Ends

Whew! It's been a busy couple of weeks. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the worst is over. In the few free moments I've had lately, I somehow managed to finish all the squares for my granny bag. I'm planning on whipping up the lining and handles today and so I'll show pictures early this week. Stay tuned!

To Be Square

I'm afraid I've lost a little steam on my granny square project. Really it's just a matter of my eyeballs being bigger than my ability to actually do everything I want to do. Is this an adult form of ADD? Fortunately, I know myself pretty well and predicted this. So I chose a small project to start off with. I have thirteen of the eighteen squares I need for my granny square bag complete. Only five more to go!


I love the color combination I chose. Every time I finish a square I think it is my favorite until I finish the next one. I am having a bit of a problem trying to keep my squares all the same size though. Is this is a rookie mistake I will soon grow out of? I hope so. Oh, and weaving in the ends is a terrible bore! But the end result is just so pretty.

In her hands

Caught up in the granny square fever, I spent last Saturday with my Mom learning to crochet a square.

I grew up watching these hands make amazing things. Now they are teaching me to make my own.
